November 02, 2017

Welcome to Associate Spotlights, a blog series from Compass Group’s Talent Management team, showcasing various associates across our family of companies.

Sarah Colby

Sarah is a District General Manager with Canteen Dining. She is responsible for managing accounts throughout her territory, including Michigan, Indiana, St. Louis, and Arkansas. She has been with Compass Group for just over two years and has also held the roles of Chef Manager and Food Service Director. Overall, Sarah has worked in the food industry for 15 years across a variety of kitchens ranging from catering companies, to country clubs, to senior living centers.

According to Porter Hinton, Canteen Division President, “Sarah is a rock star! She helped turn around our largest dining client, won the Midwest Division’s MVP award, and every account she touches turns for the better. We are grateful to have Sarah’s hard work, commitment and creativity on the Midwest dining team.”

Describe your proudest moment at Compass so far.
I enjoy challenges, however, it was nerve wracking and a bit intimidating when I was presented with the chance to manage our largest account. After months of hard work, we ended up improving our program and increasing our sales by 17%. I am proud of my team as I could not have been nearly as successful without them.

What is the best career advice that you have ever received?
Take advantage of every single opportunity that is presented to you. Do not be afraid to move outside of your designated areas of responsibility. Volunteer for special events and projects and always look for ways to expand your skill set.

What made you smile at work today?
I went back to one of my former accounts for a “Homecoming Event.” The past 3 Chef Managers at this account have all been promoted, so we decided to reunite and create a meal to share with our former clients. Sharing hugs and seeing all of the smiling faces served as a great reminder that it’s the people we serve that help make our success.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Helpful. Thoughtful. Go-Getter.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?
We live in such a hectic, chaotic, and busy world…I would love to be able to slow down time!
